암스테르담 동쪽 부두지역은 1970년대 중반 이래로 항구의 기능을 잃어가면서 쇠락해가는 부두지역이었다. 1980년대 후반부터 이 곳을 새롭고 다양한 주거단지로 개발하기 위한 계획이 시작되었고 2000년에 거의 완성된 모습을 갖추게 되었다. 암스테르담 중앙역에서 동북방향으로 자동차를 타고 10분 정도면 도착하는 옛 부두지역은 역사적인 구심의 북적이는 관광도시의 느낌과는 사뭇 다르다. 도시 중심에 근접한 동쪽 부두지역은 이제 붉은 벽돌의 3층 집합주택들이 빽빽하게 자리잡은 조용한 주택지구로 변모하였다.
암스테르담 동쪽 부두지역의 주택개발은 크게 다섯 지역으로 구분된다. 동쪽 부두지역에 접근하면서 제일 처음 만나게 되는 과거 소시장과 도살장이었던 엔트러핏 항구, 그 북쪽으로 보르네오와 스포른뷰르흐,스포른뷰르흐와 피트 헤인카더 고속도로 사이의 삼각형 지역인 리트란트, 에이만을 바라보는 길쭉한 반도 오스터러커 한들스카더, 그 곳에서 얀 스하퍼르 다리를 건너면 마주하게 되는 자바 아일랜드, 그리고 자바 아일랜드와 동쪽으로 직접 연결되는 KNSM 아일랜드가 그것이다. 특히 주거지역은 보르네오와 스포른뷰르흐,자바와 KNSM 아일랜드에 집중되어 있다. 이 다섯 지역은 각기 다른 디자이너와 감독자들의 차별화된 전략을 바탕으로 개발되어졌기 때문에 나름대로의 고유한 특성을 지니게 되었다.

The Eastern Docklands (Dutch: Oostelijk Havengebied) is a neighborhood of Amsterdam, Netherlands, located between the IJ and the Amsterdam–Rhine Canal. The harbor area was constructed in the late nineteenth century to allow for increasing trade with the Dutch East Indies; a new location was necessitated by the construction of the Amsterdam Centraal railway station, which replaced the old quays. East of the new station was a marshy area called De Rietlanden, with the Zeeburgerdijk (then called Sint Antoniesdijk), running via the Zeeburch, a fort, to the Zuiderzee. The area, about 2/3 water and 1/3 land, consists of an extension of the Oostelijke Handelskade, east of the center of town, and four artificial "islands" (peninsulas), all of which were former industrial and harbor locations. In the early 2000s, after a large-scale reorganization, the city's biggest post-World War II building project, the Eastern Docklands was home to some 17,000 people living in some the highest population densities in the Netherlands.
