The existing building of the Onafhankelijk Toneel (The Independent Theatre) was extended by adding a new free-seating theatre with 180 seats, an entrance foyer and amenities. The concept of a “building within a building” was used to provide space for the props, riggings and stagecraft all around, while keeping the interior of the theatre serenely empty. This has enhanced the versatility of the building, since the area around the theatre can be used both as backstage and a public area. The construction and technique of the actual “making” of the theatre has deliberately been made visible. Within the theatre, the physical presence of technology is kept to the absolute minimum, so as not to distract from the performance. (Franz Ziegler)
